If you’re wondering how to plan a destination wedding in Mexico, the best place to start isn’t by scrolling through hundreds of beautiful resorts. Start by figuring out what really matters most to you.
At TBD Travel Services, I’ve been helping clients plan travel since 2016, and I specialize in destination weddings throughout Mexico and the Caribbean. Mexico is my most popular destination for weddings, and since I travel so frequently myself, I’m able to provide honest, firsthand guidance as couples compare destinations, resorts, and travel options.
There are so many incredible options for a destination wedding in Mexico, but that can also make picking the right one feel overwhelming. Knowing your priorities first makes the entire process much easier.
Here’s how I recommend approaching your destination wedding planning step by step.

Before comparing resorts, sit down together and make a list of your wants and needs.
Think about questions like:
You don’t need to have every detail figured out just yet. The goal is to simply identify your non-negotiables for your wedding.
This helps me narrow hundreds of potential options into a much more manageable list of resorts that actually make sense for your celebration.
Your guests are traveling to celebrate with you, so their experience absolutely matters. But I also remind my couples that this is still your wedding.
It’s easy to get caught up trying to find a resort that makes every single guest happy. Unfortunately, that perfect resort probably doesn’t exist.
Instead, look for a balance. Consider whether the resort works for the ages represented on your guest list, whether pricing is reasonable, and how complicated travel will be. Then make sure it’s somewhere you are excited to spend your wedding week.
Remember, you shouldn’t choose a resort you don’t love simply because you’re trying to please everyone else.
Once we understand what your priorities are, we can start to narrow down the search to a few properties.
This is where planning a destination wedding in Mexico starts to feel much more manageable. Instead of comparing dozens of resorts at once, you can focus on a handful that fit your guest list, budget, wedding vision, and travel preferences.
If you’re at the very beginning of the process, my guide on how to start planning a destination wedding can also help you understand what to think about before making any major decisions.

Once you have a few resorts you love, it’s time to look more closely at their wedding packages.
Couples searching for destination weddings in Mexico all inclusive resorts often assume that “all-inclusive” means everything associated with the wedding itself is automatically included. That isn’t necessarily the case.
Wedding packages vary by resort. You’ll want to understand what each option includes, what upgrades are available, and what additional expenses could come up based on your vision.
If you want to learn more about what’s actually included in an all-inclusive destination wedding package, you can read more about that in my guide.
Rather than choosing a resort based solely on the starting price of a package, look at the complete experience and what you’ll realistically need.
I also recommend reviewing the typical destination wedding cost before making your final decision so you have a clearer idea of how the resort and wedding expenses fit together.
Once you’ve chosen your resort, the next major step is securing your wedding date.
I recommend doing this before moving forward with the guest room block. You want confirmation that your preferred date and wedding arrangements are available before asking your guests to start making their travel plans.
Popular resorts and wedding dates can book up well in advance, so this is one area where planning early can make a huge difference.
Once the wedding date is secured, we can move on to accommodations for everyone joining you.
After your wedding date is confirmed, it’s time to secure the room block for your guests.
This is also where having a destination wedding travel specialist becomes especially helpful. Instead of you becoming the person everyone contacts with questions about rooms, payments, travel, and booking deadlines, your guests have someone dedicated to helping them.
That leaves you with fewer travel logistics to manage while you focus on your actual wedding.
As your guests begin making their travel plans, I also recommend reviewing the U.S. Department of State’s Mexico travel information for current entry requirements and travel guidance.

One thing that surprises some couples is that you don’t have to plan every ceremony and reception detail immediately after booking your resort.
For many weddings, about six months before your wedding date is when you’ll really dig into the details with the resort’s wedding planner.
This is when your all inclusive Mexico wedding starts coming together through decisions about your ceremony, reception, decor, menu, and other wedding-day details.
Until then, your biggest priorities are securing the right resort, wedding date, and accommodations for your guests.
Learning how to plan a destination wedding in Mexico becomes much less overwhelming when you take it one decision at a time.
Start with your priorities. Narrow down your resorts. Compare the wedding packages. Secure your date, set up the room block, and then move into the detailed wedding planning as your celebration gets closer.
At TBD Travel Services, I help couples navigate those decisions with honest recommendations and support throughout the travel-planning process. If Mexico sounds like the perfect place to celebrate, reach out to start planning your destination wedding.
I recommend starting early, especially if you have a specific resort, wedding date, or time of year in mind. Your resort and wedding date need to be secured before we set up your guest room block, so giving yourself plenty of time also allows your guests more time to plan and budget for the trip.
Your resort stay may include accommodations, meals, drinks, and many resort activities, but the wedding itself can have separate packages and upgrade costs. Each resort handles weddings differently, which is why I recommend comparing the actual wedding packages rather than assuming everything will be included in the resort date.
You can plan on your own, but working with a destination wedding travel specialist can make managing the resort search and guest travel much easier. I help couples compare options, coordinate accommodations, and give guests a dedicated person to contact with travel questions so the couple doesn’t have to manage everything themselves.
